Who are we? The LDWA is a
national organisation whose aim is to further the interests of
those who enjoy long distance walking. One important way in which
it achieves that aim is via some 40 local groups that organise
activities in their area of the UK. One of these is the South
Wales local group - this web site aims to provide information on
their activities.
What do we do? The South
Wales Group has successfully organised and carried out the
following activities since it was formed in 1983:
- a regular programme of informal social walks in South
Wales
- challenge events, for example the Caerphilly Summits
Challenge
- walking weekends in other parts of the country
Where do we walk? Anywhere
in South Wales and adjacent areas. We are indeed fortunate in
covering an extremely varied area of countryside extending from
the Wye Valley in the east, through to the Gower Peninsular in
the west; this, of course, includes the Brecon Beacons National
park and all the other mountains, valleys, coastal and farmland
areas in between.
What are the walks like?
Each walk in the programme has a leader who selects and plans the
route, therefore no time is wasted in route finding on the walk
itself. The walks are undertaken at a reasonable and sociable
pace to accommodate people of varying abilities, nobody is ever
left behind. We usually have two walks a month ranging in length
from 14 to 30 miles. The average number of people on a walk is
probably about 9 or 10.
Who can join in? Anyone
capable of walking the distance in a reasonable time. This
includes LDWA members, from any LDWA group, people not in the
LDWA are welcome to try one or two walks to see if they suit them
- just turn up and try it - but would be expected to join if they
wish to continue and attend walks regularly. See the walks programme for the
walks taking place in the near future. Membership of the South
Wales Group itself is free. People wishing to take part just need
to turn up on the day but don't be late - we may have gone. It
may be wise to telephone the walk leader to let him know you are
attending.
What is "Where Ravens Dare"?
This is a new challenge walk being held for the first time on 16
October 2010 and is open to anybody. There are two routes on offer.
See the Where Ravens Dare
page for details of the event and an entry form.
What is the "Taith Torfaen?".
Members of the group have devised an anytime challenge called the
Taith Torfaen. Full details are given here.
What is the "Caerphilly Summits
Challenge"? This is our previous challenge walk but has now
been suspended for the time being. It was usually held on the first
Saturday in July. Results from previous events are still available
on the Caerphilly
Summits Challenge page.
